Police: McCain volunteer made up robbery story

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A McCain campaign volunteer made up a story of being robbed, pinned to the ground and having the letter "B" scratched on her face in a politically inspired attack, police said Friday.
Ashley Todd, 20-year-old college student from College Station, Texas, admitted Friday that the story was false and was being charged with making a false report to police, said Maurita Bryant, the assistant chief of the police department's investigations division. Police doubted her story from the start, Bryant said.
Todd, who is white, told police she was attacked by a 6-foot-4 black man Wednesday night.
She now can't explain why she invented the story, Bryant said. Todd also told police she believes she cut the backward "B" onto her own cheek, but did not provide an explanation of how or why, Bryant said.
Todd initially told investigators she was attempting to use a bank branch ATM when the man approached her from behind, put a knife with a 4- to 5-inch blade to her throat and demanded money. She told police she handed the assailant $60 and walked away.
Todd told investigators that she suspected the man then noticed a John McCain sticker on her car, became angry and punched her in the back of the head, knocking her to the ground and telling her "you are going to be a Barack supporter," police said.
She said he continued to punch and kick her while threatening "to teach her a lesson for being a McCain supporter," police said. She said he then sat on her chest, pinned her hands down with his knees and scratched a backward letter "B" into her face with a dull knife.
Todd told police she didn't seek medical attention, but instead went to a friend's apartment nearby and called police about 45 minutes later.
The Associated Press could not immediately locate Todd's family.
Bryant said somebody charged with making a false report would typically be cited and sent a summons. But because police have concerns about Todd's mental health, they are consulting with the Allegheny County District Attorney. She remained in custody and was awaiting arraignment.
Todd worked in New York for the College Republican National Committee before moving two weeks ago to Pennsylvania, where her duties included recruiting college students, the committee's executive director, Ethan Eilon, has said.
Eilon declined to comment on the investigation Friday or to help The Associated Press contact Todd.
Earlier Friday, police said they had found inconsistencies in Todd's story. They gave her a lie-detector test, but wouldn't release the polygraph results. Investigators also said bank surveillance photos did not back up the woman's initial story of being attacked at an ATM.
Police interviewed Todd after she contacted police Wednesday night and again on Thursday, Bryant said. They asked her to come back Friday, ostensibly to help police put together a sketch of the man. Instead, detectives began interviewing her.
"They just started talking to her and she just opened up and said she wanted to tell the truth," Bryant said.
Bryant said it doesn't appear that anyone else put the woman up to the false report.
Police suspected all along that Todd might not be telling the truth, starting with the fact that the "B" was backward, Bryant said.
"We have robbers here in Pittsburgh, but they don't generally mutilate someone's face like that," Bryant said. "They just take the money and run."

Pope condemns 'pagan' love of money, power

PARIS - Pope Benedict XVI condemned unbridled “pagan” passion for power, possessions and money as a modern-day plague Saturday as he led more than a quarter of a million Catholics in an outdoor Mass in Paris.
Benedict was making his first visit as pontiff to the French capital, renowned for its luxury goods, fashion sense and cultural riches.
“Has not our modern world created its own idols?” Benedict said in his homily, and wondered aloud whether people have “imitated, perhaps inadvertently, the pagans of antiquity?”“This is a question that all people, if they are honest with themselves, cannot help but ask,” the pontiff said.
The 260,000 or so people who gathered on the lawns of the Esplanade des Invalides displayed a joyful outpouring of faith for this traditionally Roman Catholic country, which has witnessed a sharp decline in churchgoing in recent years.
Continuing John Paul's campaignBenedict has continued with a campaign started by his predecessor, John Paul II, who worried that the affluent West was turning consumerism into a kind of religion and ignoring its Christian roots of spiritual values.
Paraphrasing from the New Testament, Benedict decried “insatiable greed” and said “the love of money is the root of all evil.”
“Have not money, the thirst for possessions, for power and even knowledge, diverted man from his true destiny?” the pope asked.
Benedict blasted modern society’s thirst for these new “pagan” idols as a “scandal, a real plague.”
The pope urged the faithful to “shun the worship of idols. Do not tire of doing good!”’
Faithful welcome wordsListeners welcomed his words.
“It was a vivid call to order about what is essential in life,” said Herve Tarcier, a 49-year-old engineer who volunteered at the Mass. “This was exactly the message our society needs.”
Jacqueline Dudek, a 76-year-old great-grandmother from Paris, said she was glad much of France’s political elite was there to hear the anti-materialism homily.
“They have plenty of things to learn,” she said.
The late-morning Mass ended peacefully, with followers pressing for a chance to touch the pontiff’s robes or clutch his hand as he left the field. Security officers surrounded the pope, and about a dozen sharpshooters watched over the crowd from the roof of a stately 19th century building overlooking the Esplanade.
It was Benedict’s only public appearance Saturday before he flies to Lourdes on a pilgrimage to the shrine there, which draws millions of pilgrims each year, many of them hoping for miracle cures of physical or psychic ills.
Tens of thousands of faithful, many of them young people, had camped overnight on the Parisian field after hearing greetings from the pope Friday night as he left a prayer service in Notre Dame.
Entrenched secularismOn Friday, Benedict told young people they shouldn’t fear spreading their faith in a society where secularism is entrenched and Islam is growing. While most French are Catholic at least by tradition — if not in practice — the old yarn is that most go to church three times in their life: at their baptism, wedding and funeral.
France also has a fervent belief that faith and the state should be kept strictly separate.
Benedict and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who held talks on Friday, spoke publicly of the contribution religion can make to forging an ethical society.
“They say that Catholics in France are fewer and fewer, and less devoted. But you can see here that is not true,” said Robert Pavilla, a 58-year-old school groundskeeper, gesturing toward the throngs of people Saturday on the Paris esplanade.
Later in the day, France’s rail authority said a train carrying 350 pilgrims to see the pope at Lourdes hit a truck at a railroad crossing near Toulouse, lightly injuring the truck driver. No other injuries were reported.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
am i crazy or did the man who runs the most money and power hungry organization in the world just condemn others who do the same? how about practicing what you preach. sell some priceless relics from the vatican and feed the poor, or quit closing churches in poor areas of the usa because they dont make a "profit", or helping some debt ridden country get right again or.....well you get the picture. the catholic church likes to tell you how to do things as long as it doesnt pertain to them. pope nazi should do as he preaches.

People, quit shopping there.............

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is mobilizing its store managers and department supervisors around the country to warn that if Democrats win power in November, they'll likely change federal law to make it easier for workers to unionize companies -- including Wal-Mart.
In recent weeks, thousands of Wal-Mart store managers and department heads have been summoned to mandatory meetings at which the retailer stresses the downside for workers if stores were to be unionized.
According to about a dozen Wal-Mart employees who attended such meetings in seven states, Wal-Mart executives claim that employees at unionized stores would have to pay hefty union dues while getting nothing in return, and may have to go on strike without compensation. Also, unionization could mean fewer jobs as labor costs rise ...
The Wal-Mart human-resources managers who run the meetings don't specifically tell attendees how to vote in November's election, but make it clear that voting for Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama would be tantamount to inviting unions in, according to Wal-Mart employees who attended gatherings in Maryland, Missouri and other states.
"The meeting leader said, 'I am not telling you how to vote, but if the Democrats win, this bill will pass and you won't have a vote on whether you want a union,'" said a Wal-Mart customer-service supervisor from Missouri. "I am not a stupid person. They were telling me how to vote," she said.

when is america going to realize that this isnt an all-american company. as a matter of fact they dont like americans. if they did like you they wouldnt chase your jobs overseas. they wouldnt run your company out of town and then hire you at slave wages. the few dollars you save there wont be enough to save you.

Crocodile Hunter's Son Bitten By Baby Boa

NEW YORK -- Could it be another crocodile hunter in training?
Robert Irwin, the 4-year-old son of "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin wasn't at all alarmed when he was recently bitten by a baby boa constrictor, according to his mother.
Irwin's widow, Terri, said Monday at an appearance at FAO Schwarz with her two children that he picked one of them up and it bit him on the finger. She said he was so proud to have "copped his first hit."
He said, 'I hope it wasn't venomous,' so I assured Robert I wouldn't actually let him play with venomous snakes," she added.
Terri Irwin said the couple's 9-year-old daughter, Bindi, was first bitten by a snake when she was 18 months old.
Bindi Irwin was in New York signing action figure toys of her late father as the family promoted a new line of toys.
Steve Irwin, known through his nature television series as a wrangler of crocodiles and snakes, died in 2006 from a stingray's barbed tail during an underwater documentary shoot. He was 44.

what a proud family moment. i remember writing here that steve irwin was irresponsible with animals, that he didnt respect them. make no mistake...he didnt. now his kids dont either. what a way to teach them. i hope there is no crying when one of the kids eats it.

Research Shows More Women Committing Suicide

There was shocking news Monday about the number of women committing suicide. The numbers are way up, according to new research.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at the nation's death rates between 1999 and 2004 and found an unusually large jump in suicides among middle-age Americans, especially women.
The latest research says in a five-year period, suicides in the 45 to 55 age group climbed 31 percent.
In Pittsburgh Four Allegheny Center in the North Side, people come three to four times a week to sort out their lives. There, they find they are not alone and there are solutions to their pain, and suicide is not the answer to crisis.
"We reach out to them and make sure they know that there are things that can be done to help them feel better so they don't have to get to the point where these kinds of options seem to make sense to them," said director of intensive psychiatric day treatment, Dr. Nancy Kennedy.
New research suggests there is more reason to reach out to the nation's middle- age Americans than ever before. According to the CDC, the suicide rate among 45- to 54-year-olds increased almost 20 percent from 1999 to 2004, which was the latest year studied.
But the rate for 15- to 19-year-old climbed less than 2 percent in the same period and actually dropped among those 65 and older. But the rate among women 45 to 54 shot up 35 percent.
But why? Experts said they believe women in that age group have specific stressors peculiar to women in that age group.
The stress of living and coping with life in today's world is not about to end, and experts said the suicide rate might continue to climb. So it's important to watch out for unusual changes among middle-age people, including drinking alone, withdrawing to themselves and loss of interest in things they once enjoyed. It requires careful observation and a willingness to reach out and help.

ladies, welcome to equality. how do you like it so far?

Pregnant Woman Attacks Bartender Who Cut Her Off; Plea Reached

BEAVER, Pa. -- A pregnant Beaver County woman accused of smashing a beer bottle against a bartender's head after she was told she couldn't order any more drinks at a Rochester bar agreed to plead guilty Tuesday.
Police said Keisharra Abercrombie, 30, who is six months pregnant, assaulted Ricki Shields, 39, early Saturday morning at Squires Municipal Grill on Adams Street after being told she shouldn't be drinking.
Shields said she noticed Abercrombie was pregnant and told her she wouldn't serve her any more alcohol. According to the police report, Abercrombie got mad and hit Shields with a beer bottle and glass, ripping part of shield's ear off. She needed 28 stitches and plastic surgery to put it together again.
Abercrombie, of Rochester, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of aggravated assault in exchange for charges of simple assault, harassment and reckless endangerment being dropped.
Prosecutors said Abercrombie would be sentenced to six months of probation and won't have to serve any jail time.
Abercrombie's defense attorney said he was pleased with the deal, but Shields said she was not happy that Abercrombie would be let out of jail, likely within 24 hours.
Abercrombie's attorney said she's a nursing student who just wants to get on with her life.
"And wants to make it clear that this isn't a situation where she went in like a raving lunatic looking for a problem," said defense attorney Steven Valsamidis. "There was a verbal altercation escalating to a physical altercation resulting in injury."
Shields said she's not afraid to tend bar again, but is not entirely happy with the plea agreement.
"As far as the probation, I'm not comfortable with that, and she's going to be back on the street, and the only thing that's good is if anything happens again, she will have the felony charge underneath her belt, and she'd go to jail," said Shields.
As part of the plea agreement, Abercrombie is prohibited from returning to the bar where the incident occurred.
Abercrombie, who's been in jail since the incident, was scheduled to be released on bail Tuesday. The court appearance at which time she's expected to make her guilty plea and get probation is scheduled for April 11.

what a pleasant memory for the child. i hope she puts the newspaper clippings in the babies scrapbook. you can almost here her snuggling up and telling her retarded child how she was carrying it when she got in a drunken rage and ripped off part of the bartenders ear. wont that be lovely.

For the love of God, get it on!

Pastor tells married couples to make time for hanky-panky every day

YBOR CITY, Fla. - A southwest Florida church issued a challenge for its married members this past Sunday: Hanky-panky every day. Relevant Church head pastor Paul Wirth says the 50 percent divorce rate was the catalyst for The 30-Day Sex Challenge.
"And that's no different for people who attend church," Wirth said. "Sometimes life gets in the way. Our jobs get in the way."
Oh, and the flip side of the challenge? No rolling in the sheets for the unwed.Church member Tim Jones and his fiancée agreed to take on the challenge, though he acknowledges it'll be a tough month. But he added: "I think it's worth trying to find out other things about each other."

i'm guessing tim and fiancee will be failing this test.

Wife speaks out about pancake fight

An unusual story of domestic violence involving an Oklahoma City couple and pancakes has sparked an emotional response from a number of NEWS 9 viewers and the alleged victim.
Last week NEWS 9 reported the arrest of a Jacob Laws who police said attacked his wife for making a batch of bad pancakes. His wife, Jessica Laws, said she was attacked, but it wasn't because of her cooking.
"When you argue and fight things can escalate," she said. "You're mad about this, but then the 15 other things you're mad about get brought into that and that is exactly what happened."
Jessica Laws said a comment about her cooking is what started an argument between her and her husband, but the pancake flap isn't what led up to a physical confrontation between the two.
"It wasn't about pancakes," she said. "It wasn't about breakfast. It had nothing to do with that part of it."
Jessica Laws declined to comment on what the fight was actually about. Police cited the breakfast debacle as the motive for Jacob Laws attacking and choking his wife of just one year.
The arrest was mentioned during a NEWS 9 newscast that focused on domestic violence in Oklahoma.
Jessica Laws said she "bawled" when she saw it.
"It's been a hard situation all around and for it to be publicized," she said. "I wish it would have never been because this is a private matter."
Jessica said the publicity of her husband's arrest could keep other domestic violence victims in the dark, for fear that their stories also will be thrown into the spotlight.
"It's not right," Jessica Laws said. "I know that it's not, but he has to get help."
A spokesman for the YWCA said exposure of such violence is a positive thing, because it shows victims they're not alone.
Jacob Laws was arrested on complaints of domestic abuse and assault and battery. He remained in jail Sunday night.

a bad batch of pancakes? is this any reason to go to jail? way to go jacob

Thief steals urinal sensor for Mercedes

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A young mechanic, Wang Chi-sheng, is suspected of stealing a urinal sensor, which he said he planned to use to modify a Mercedes Benz car.
Wang has been accused of trespassing for entering a closed-down gas station restroom and stealing the heat sensors used on the urinals. Police escorting Wang stated that they laughed as they listened to his plan to use the sensors to test out his latest designs for improving a Mercedes Benz car.
The Taiwan Mercedes' technicians department said the young man's scheme was "unbelievable," commenting that "the probability of successfully using a sensor from a public urinal to replace special factory-made sensors was and remains zero."
What's more, the technicians explained the thief's actions are quite dangerous, and could even lead to creating an electric current that leads to the engine, which would cause it to ignite and possibly even explode.

isnt having a mercedes enough? do you really need to reach into a piss filled urinal to make it better? maybe those cars arent all they are cracked up to be.....

Woman 'high' at time of sex act with boy

Middletown woman accused of transmitting to teen chlamydia.

MIDDLETOWN — A Middletown woman accused of transmitting chlamydia to a 13-year-old boy said she was under the influence of illegal drugs when friends talked her into the act, a detective testified on Friday, Feb. 15, in Middletown Municipal Court.
Tabitha Hollandsworth, 20, is charged with unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, a felony. She appeared for a preliminary hearing before Judge Mark Wall, who had her case bound over to a Butler County grand jury. Middletown police Detective Fred Shuemake, who conducted the investigation, said that last September, the 13-year-old, as well as a 15-year-old boy and an unidentified adult male had been at an apartment with Hollandsworth.
"They were all there to have sex," Shuemake testified.
The younger teen's grandparents reported the incident Sept. 30 after the boy complained of difficulty urinating and was diagnosed with the sexually transmitted disease, which is treatable with antibiotics.
The boy had not known Hollandsworth's last name, so it took some time to figure out who the suspect was, Shuemake said.
But once he showed the boy an array of photographs of Hollandsworth and five similar looking women, Shuemake said he immediately identified Hollandsworth.
Shuemake said when he interviewed her about the September incident, Hollandsworth told him "some friends had talked her" into having sex with the boys and that she was "high at the time on crack."
Hollandsworth is free on a $15,000 bond.
this chick is cute. i was going to say how lucky the kid was, that was until she gave him chlamydia. this kid learned a hard lesson very early in life.

The following were taken from Bainbridge police reports.

Feb. 15Young drinkers: Police located a vehicle on Agatewood Road that matched the description of vehicle used in a recent theft at a Suquamish store. The 18-year-old driver appeared intoxicated but denied that he’d consumed alcohol. An 18 year-old passenger admitted she’d been drinking. She said she was feeling sick after an officer noted the vomit on her shirt. She also told police that the beer they consumed was stolen. Police took the driver, a Poulsbo resident, to the police station after arresting him for possession of alcohol under the age of 21. He was belligerent toward police, calling them insulting names and telling them they had “low level jobs.” He also dropped his pants and told police his penis “was nothing special.” He was cited and released to his parents.

you have to like a man who knows his limitations. the police said that after further review ...he was right.

Police get a grip on serial masturbator

Police near the southern Swedish town of Sävsjö answered to a rather unusual call on Wednesday night. $140k in cash stolen from Tyson chair

, Ark. - A college student was arrested in the theft of a briefcase containing more than $140,000 from the home of the chairman of meat processing giant Tyson Foods Inc., police said.
Ryan Silvey, 19, was arrested in Olathe, Kan., by the FBI Fugitive Task Force, the Johnson Police Department said. He was taken back to Arkansas to answer a theft charge and was being held in lieu of $50,000 bond Saturday at the Washington County jail.
The briefcase was stolen during a party thrown by John Tyson's daughter at the family's home in Johnson around Dec. 27 without his knowledge or consent, police said. Silvey and another friend were uninvited guests who acted suspicious while looking around the house, police said.
Tyson reported the theft Jan. 2, saying he had collected the money over time and had it hidden in the house.
"I regret this happened and it saddens me, but I'm very grateful to our local police team for all the great work they did to get this resolved," Tyson said in statement. "I have certainly learned a lesson through this ordeal and will never leave cash in my house again."
Police say they have recovered some of the money.
The jail did not have any attorney information for Silvey, who is the son of Steve Silvey, head track coach at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The senior Silvey was the assistant sprint coach at University of Arkansas from 1994 through 2000.
Silvey said he heard about the arrest Saturday morning and was "very disappointed, very shocked." Ryan Silvey lives with his mother in Fayetteville, Ark., he said. "We're not very close," he said.
Another man, Logan Lorenz, 23, was arrested on a theft charge and released Friday, police said. Police say they are still seeking Bryce Kelly Anderson, 19.
It was not clear whether either man had an attorney. An officer at the Johnson Police Department referred questions Saturday to Detective Denny Upton, who could not be reached for comment.
Tyson, 54, took over as Tyson's chairman in 1998 and was chief executive from 2001 to 2006. He led the 2001 merger with meatpacking giant IBP Inc. that made Tyson Foods the world's largest meat processor.

does anyone care to know what this guy was doing with a briefcase full of cash in the first place? no? just me, huh? ok.......

Ex-Homecoming Queen Beats Sister With Fake Leg In Trailer

NORTH HUNTINGDON, Pa. - A former homecoming queen is facing a slew of charges Thursday, accused of attacking her sister with a prosthetic leg and then threatening to burn down a neighbor's home. Not long after graduating from Norwin High School, drama began for Donna Sturkie-Anthony.
The ex-homecoming queen had two DUI convictions in Allegheny County in 1991. One was in Rankin, where police said she was so drunk she smeared her feces in the back of a police car. Anthony married and moved away in the late 1990s. But when she returned, she was arrested another half dozen times by North Huntingdon police, most recently last month.
Police said Anthony's sister came to visit her at her Route 30 trailer, and the two started arguing about her alcohol abuse. Then, police said Anthony pulled off her sister's prosthetic leg and beat her with it.
A month later, police said, Anthony stole her neighbor's telephone and then threatened to burn down their trailer if they testified against her.
In another incident, police said Anthony threw ground meat at her neighbor before she threatened to kick his pregnant daughter in the stomach.
"The police, they call for backup when they come up here to deal with her," said one neighbor who asked not to be identified. "They know who she is."
Anthony is being held without bond in the Westmoreland County Prison. Police said it's because she is a danger to others and herself.
isnt it enough that she made the headlines? do we really need to see the before and after pictures? what kind of woman beats another woman with her prosthetic leg? this woman sounds like a bad person. i'm sure shes bitter because as homecoming queen she never imagined that she would be living in a trailer. that can make anybody angry and on top of that shes a drunk. this spells classy for me.
